Exploration

Each scholar enrolls in an Exploratory Course in which they examine particular issues in theology as well as the relationship of theology to contemporary society and the public good. Exploratory Courses consist of ten to twelve scholars led by an Exploratory Leader. You will be with the same Exploratory Course throughout the program. On weekends, Exploratory Groups visit local congregations and faith communities. These "pilgrimages" provide opportunities to experience how people of different faith traditions worship God. Tuesday mornings are set aside for "contextual education" service work or other explorations related to the course, making use of Atlanta-area resources. Before the Summer Academy begins, you will be sent a full listing of Exploratory Courses for this summer and we will ask you to indicate your preference. While we cannot guarantee that you will be placed in your first choice, we will do the best we can to respond to your preferences.

In addition to Exploratory Groups, all scholars and staff participate in week-long Plenary Courses taught by faculty from Atlanta–area seminaries, colleges and universities. Allowing the entire community to explore specific topics together, these courses contribute to the "common text" of the Summer Academy. Topics addressed through these plenary courses have included "Interpreting the Bible," "Interfaith Dialogue," "Theological Language" and "The Meaning of Vocation." In addition to plenary courses, weekly plenary discussions on Thursday mornings focus on justice and diversity, enabling scholars to bring theological methods and insights to bear on challenging issues such as racism and sexism.
